How to Choose the Right Sunscreen for Your Skin? Know This Before Your Skin Suffers!

Thailand’s sun is no joke—it’s intense and unrelenting. If we ignore sunscreen, our skin is like a house without a roof!
Many people wear sunscreen but still end up with dull skin, breakouts, or no noticeable results. The real problem might be using the wrong type of sunscreen for your skin.

Today, I want to help you understand how to choose sunscreen that suits your skin type, in a simple and practical way. This ensures true sun protection and helps reduce the risk of wrinkles, dark spots, sunburn, and premature aging.

Understand UV Rays First: The Invisible Skin Damagers

Before choosing sunscreen, you should know what UV rays are and how they affect your skin:

 ● UVA: Penetrates deep into the dermis. Destroys collagen, causes premature aging, wrinkles, dark spots.

 ● UVB: Affects the outer skin layer. Causes sunburn, redness, darkening, and can lead to skin cancer.

 ● UVC: The most dangerous, but mostly blocked by the earth’s atmosphere.

👉 A good sunscreen should protect against both UVA and UVB, labeled as “Broad Spectrum” or shown with “PA++++ / SPF”.

Know Your Skin Type Before Choosing Sunscreen

Different skin types have different needs. Using the wrong sunscreen can cause clogged pores, irritation, or dryness:

🔹 Oily or Acne-Prone Skin:

 ● Go for gel or fluid textures—lightweight and quick-absorbing.

 ● Look for “Oil-Free” and “Non-Comedogenic” labels.

 ● Avoid silicones and oils.

🔹 Dry Skin:

 ● Choose sunscreens with moisturizers like Ceramides or Hyaluronic Acid.

 ● Cream or lotion formulas with richer textures are ideal.

🔹 Sensitive Skin:

 ● Use Physical Sunscreen (reflects UV rays).

 ● Avoid fragrances, alcohol, and harsh chemicals.

🔹 Combination Skin:

 ● Choose a balanced formula—hydrating but not greasy.

● You may use different sunscreens for T-zone and U-zone areas.

Types of Sunscreen: Physical vs. Chemical

There are two main types of sunscreen, each with different protection methods and possible side effects:

🟤 Physical Sunscreen (Mineral Sunscreen):

 ● Uses Zinc Oxide or Titanium Dioxide.

 ● Reflects UV rays immediately upon application.

 ● Best for sensitive skin, children, or those prone to irritation.

 ● Downsides: Thick texture, may leave a white cast or residue.

🟠 Chemical Sunscreen:

 ● Absorbs UV rays and converts them into heat.

 ● Lightweight, absorbs easily, no white cast.

 ● Must be applied 15–30 minutes before sun exposure.

 ● May irritate some due to alcohol or chemical content.

👉 Not sure what to choose? Try a Hybrid Sunscreen, which combines the benefits of both.

How to Read a Sunscreen Label Without Getting Fooled

Your sunscreen’s label is your best guide. Here’s what to look for:

SPF (Sun Protection Factor):

 ● Indicates protection against UVB.

 ● SPF 30 = ~97% protection, SPF 50 = ~98%.

 ● For strong sun exposure, go for SPF 50+.

PA+ to PA++++:

 ● Indicates UVA protection (for wrinkles, dark spots).

 ● More “+” means stronger protection.

Broad Spectrum:

 ● Protects against both UVA and UVB.

Water Resistant:

 ● Ideal for outdoor activities and swimming.

 ● Still needs reapplying every 2 hours.

Correct Amount and Application Method: Too Little = No Effect

Most people don’t use enough sunscreen, which reduces its effectiveness. Follow these guidelines:

 ● Face: About two finger-lengths or 1/4 teaspoon.

 ● Body: Roughly a shot glass amount (one full palm).

⏱ Reapply every 2–3 hours, especially if sweating or swimming.

📝 Tip:
Apply sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine.
If wearing makeup, use sunscreen sprays or cushion sunscreen for reapplication during the day.

Match Your Sunscreen to Your Lifestyle

 ● 👩‍💻 Office workers: SPF 30+, lightweight and non-greasy formulas.

 ● 🏝 Outdoor enthusiasts/travelers: SPF 50+, water- and sweat-resistant.

 ● 🎨 Makeup wearers: Light texture, easy to blend, doesn’t interfere with makeup.

 ● 👶 Children or very sensitive skin: Safer to use Physical Sunscreen.

Patch Test First: More Important Than You Think!

Always patch test a new sunscreen—especially if you have sensitive skin or a history of reactions.

 ● Test on your inner arm or behind the ear for 24 hours.

 ● If there’s no itching, redness, or irritation, it’s safe to use.

In Summary: Choose the Right Sunscreen = Beautiful Skin Without Filters!
Sunscreen is your daily shield—whether indoors or outdoors.
Pick one that suits your skin, and it won’t just protect against the sun, but will also help prevent aging, dark spots, and keep your skin healthy long-term.
